If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and are married to a nonresident of Canada, you can sponsor your spouse and file a petition for your spouse to receive permanent resident status. After receiving permanent resident status, your spouse can travel to and permanently reside in Canada. The process for obtaining permanent resident status for a spouse varies according to whether the spouse is currently living in Canada or abroad. In all cases, you must file a petition with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).
