Medical practitioners in regional Australia – Age exemption

Department of Immigration and Border Protection

Medical practitioners in regional Australia – Age exemption

To attract and retain vital health services in rural areas, there is an exemption to the age requirement for eligible medical practitioners who are 50 years of age and over, work in regional Australia and who want to apply for subclass 186 visa and subclass 187 visa.

From 1 July 2015, the age exemption available to medical practitioners in regional Australia will no longer require employment with the same employer while holding a Temporary Work (skilled) subclass 457 visa or a Medical Practitioner (temporary) subclass 422 visa.

Medical practitioners who are applying for a subclass 186 or subclass 187 visa must demonstrate at least four years employment in the nominated occupation. These medical practitioners must demonstrate that at least two years of the required four years employment was located in regional Australia and the nominated position will also be located in regional Australia.

See more information about subclass 186, subclass 187 and subclass 457

STUDENT VISA CHANGES AS OF 1st JULY 2016
Brief update. Full description will be prepared and uploaded to Immigration Information Album.
                    (1) Only 2 subclasses as of 1/7/16: 500 (Student) and 590 (Student Guardian)
Subclasses 570, 571, 572, 573, 575 and 580 removed (holders of these visas will maintain their visa until its expiry).
                    (2) Assessment Levels removed. All applicants one assessment level.
                    (3) Holders of subclasses 426, 402, 995 and 600 Visitor visa (ONLY Sponsored Family Stream and Approved Destination Stream) added to those not eligible to apply for a student visa on shore.
                    (4) Financial capacity required for grant of visa, increased for primary applicant and accompanying family members. Evidence required for all applicants.
                    (5) Minimum English language test scores (e.g. IELTS, TOEFLiBT, etc) required for ALL studies, except registered ELICOS courses. Visas for courses packaged with ELICOS also require minimum English language test scores. Exemptions apply for applicants who have completed studies in specific “English speaking” countries.
English language test scores validity 2 years.
Further updates on matters reflected in the changes to take effect as of 1 July 2016.
Under the new simplified student visa framework:
Level of evidence for financial capacity and English language proficiency that a student is required to provide with their visa application will be based on the immigration risk outcomes associated with the student’s education provider and country of citizenship.
Risk ratings will NOT be published, but an online tool is intended to go live on 1 July 2016 and education providers, students and agents will be able to access the online tool at any stage of the visa application process.
Applicants who have completed a substantial component of a course leading to an AQF qualification at the CIV level or higher, conducted in Australia in English while holding a student visa MAY be exempted from the English proficiency evidenciary requirement.
Please note the above are NOT the only required criteria to be met.
All applicants will continue to have to meet all other core visa criteria, such as the Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement and health and character criteria.

Changes to visa lodgement arrangements in Australia

From 20 February 2017, you will no longer be able to lodge an application in person in Australia for the following visa subclasses:

Visitor visa (subclass 600 Tourist Stream)

                        Remaining Relative visa (subclass 835)

                        Carer visa (subclass 836)

Aged Dependent Relative visa (subclass 838)

New Zealand (Family Relationship) visa (subclass 461).

Our preferred lodgement method for visas continues to be online through ImmiAccount. This option is available for the Visitor visa (subclass 600 Tourist Stream) applications.
The paper lodgement option is available for all the subclasses above. The paper application form must be sent by post or courier to the address specified on the application form.

Abolition and replacement of the 457 visa – Government reforms to employer sponsored

On 18 April 2017, the Government announced that the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457 visa) will be abolished and replaced with the completely new Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa in March 2018.
The TSS visa programme will be comprised of a Short-Term stream of up totwo years and a Medium-Term stream of up to four years and will support businesses in addressing genuine skill shortages in their workforce and will contain a number of safeguards which prioritise Australian workers.
This new visa is part of the Government’s significant reform package to strengthen the integrity and quality of Australia’s temporary and permanent employer sponsored skilled migration programmes.
                            Key reforms include:
                            • Introducing the temporary skill shortage visa with new requirements, including but not limited to:
                              • new, more targeted occupation lists which better align with skill needs in the Australian labour market
                              • a requirement for visa applicants to have at least two years’ work experience in their skilled occupation
                              • a minimum market salary rate which ensures that overseas workers cannot be engaged to undercut Australian workers
                              • mandatory labour market testing, unless an international obligation applies,
                              • capacity for only one onshore visa renewal under the Short-Term stream
                              • capacity for visa renewal onshore and a permanent residence pathway after three years under the Medium-Term stream
                              • the permanent residence eligibility period will be extended from two to three years
                              • a non-discriminatory workforce test to ensure employers are not actively discriminating against Australian workers
                              • strengthened requirement for employers to contribute to training Australian workers
                              • the Department of Immigration and Border Protection will collect Tax File Numbers and data will be matched with the Australian Tax Office’s records, and
                              • mandatory penal clearance certificates to be provided.

                            • Tightening eligibility requirements for employer sponsored permanent skilled visas, including but not limited to:
                              • tightened English language requirements
                              • a requirement for visa applicants to have at least three years’ work experience
                              • applicants must be under the maximum age requirement of 45 at the time of application
                              • strengthened requirement for employers to contribute to training Australian workers, and
                              • employers must pay the Australian market salary rate and meet the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold1.

                            • Concessions for regional Australia will continue to be available:
                              • Employers in regional Australia will continue to have access to occupations under the temporary and permanent visas, to reflect their skills needs.
                              • Existing permanent visa concessions for regional Australia, such as waiving the nomination fee and providing age exemptions for certain occupations, will be retained. Consideration will be given to expanding the occupations in regional Australia that are exempt from the age requirement.

                            • Significantly condensing the occupation lists used for skilled migration visas, including the subclass 457 visa, from 19 April 2017.

The implementation of these reforms will begin immediately and will be completed in March 2018.
Further information on reforms is available:

Further information on different aspects of the reforms will be published in due course.
                            1 Set at $53,900 as at 12 April 2016.

                              Τι προβλέπει η νέα βίζα εργασίας;
