          Heroes at work: careers in emergency services

          Heroes at work: careers in emergency services | Canadian Immigrant

          By Lisa Evans
          December 20, 2013
          \Constable Lovejeet Bains of India works for Peel Police.

          If the flashing lights and sirens of Canada’s emergency services personnel have you thinking about a career in the public service, read on. Becoming part of these noble professions is competitive, but for those up for the challenge, great rewards await.

          Paramedic
          Paramedics provide pre-hospital assessments and medical care. While education varies from province to province, a college-level course in paramedic training typically takes one to two years, while advanced care paramedics requires an additional one to two years of training. Internationally educated paramedics can have their credentials examined by the provincial regulatory body; however, at present there are no specialized programs that allow these individuals to upgrade their skills upon arrival in Canada. The good news is the increasing demand for health care professionals means there are many job opportunities for paramedics.

          Jodie Marshall of England began working as a paramedic after arriving in Canada and says he enjoys being part of this rewarding career. “Being able to do something on the worst day of someone’s life [is the best part of my job],” he says. Individuals with an ability to adapt to new situations are sought after in this ever-evolving profession. “One call will see you working in a team of 20 emergency responders to extract patients from an upturned vehicle and within the next two hours you’ll be delivering a baby in the confines of a fast moving ambulance,” says Marshall. Salaries range from $40,000 to $50,000 for a new recruit and top off at $70,000 to $80,000.

          Police officer / RCMP

          With Canada’s changing cultural landscape, policing is one career where newcomers can make a big difference. “One of our goals is to hire people that represent the community,” says Constable Wayne Jackson, recruiting officer of the Toronto Police Service. Multicultural cities, whether through municipal police forces or through the RCMP have great demand for officers who speak second languages, opening the door to newcomers seeking an exciting and rewarding career.

          To be accepted to the police academy, a candidate needs to be either a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen, have no criminal record and a high school diploma. To be an RCMP offer, you must be a full citizen. “Post-secondary is very advantageous,” says Jackson, although the type of degree is less important. “People think if they have police foundations, they’re going to have a leg up on the competition, but that’s not the case. We like candidates to have a diversity of education,” says Jackson. International degrees must be accredited.

          Constable Lovejeet Bains of Peel Police immigrated to Canada from India in 1998 and has been working as a police officer for eight years. “There’s a great feeling of satisfaction that you get from this career,” he says. While stress is a challenging part of the job, Bains says the positives outweigh the negatives. “Being a police officer, you come across situations that are not faced by an ordinary civilian [such as] accident scenes or the victims of violence, but I believe I can touch more lives positively than any other profession,” he says. Salaries range from $60,000 to $90,000 before overtime and benefits.

          Firefighter

          Firefighters not only put out fires, they’re also often first responders to medical crises. To become a firefighter, you must have a high school diploma, pass a medical and fitness assessment and be certified in CPR/First Aid.
          Several colleges in Canada offer the Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Program, which is not required but does give candidates a leg up in the hiring process. Lieutenant Mark Baker of Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services immigrated to Canada from England in 2004 and says firefighting is an exciting and rewarding occupation. “You don’t know what you’re going to with every call, but whenever you get the call you know that someone needs your help,” he says.

          While having an impact on others’ lives can be exhilarating, it can also be a mentally taxing. “You empathize with the people that you’re trying to help and that can get to you,” he says. While a desire to help others is an important quality to have, Baker says the ability to work with others is essential. “Everything that we do is teamwork, so you have to be able to work well with others,” he says. The average salary for a firefighter in Canada is $65,000 before overtime and benefits.

          Correctional officer

          Correctional officers maintain the safety and security of Canada’s federal and provincial penitentiaries. They monitor and supervise offenders, conduct patrols, escort inmates inside and outside the prison, and conduct cell searches. In the federal system, candidates are required to be Canadian citizens. Applicants must also possess a high school diploma or pass a provincially approved secondary school equivalency test.
          Gideon Nekou immigrated to Canada in 2001 from Togo, and has been working as a correctional officer since 2009. He says although working with offenders can at times be scary, he enjoys assisting inmates in their transition to become law-abiding citizens. “Most of all, I enjoy working to protect the public,” he says. Salaries range from $52,000 to $66,000.

            Great demand for nurses in Canada | Canada Updates
            Mon, 08/19/2013 - 17:55 by Harleen Kaur

            And this is wonderful news for foreign nurses wanting to immigrate to Canada and pursue nursing as a career there.

            Canada needs nurses--If you happen to be a nurse and willing to come to Canada for working as a nurse, then now is the right time to apply for Canada immigration.

            Canada will need as many as 60,000 nurses by the year 2022. And this means Canada will have to seek foreign nurses for filling such a huge demand for nurses in the coming decade. Nurse professionals are in big demand in Canada.

            That is due to the ageing population of Canada in more need of healthcare. Its not only urban Canada that needs nurses but nurses have a high demand in rural regions as well.
            Canada has a shortage of nurses and foreign nurses wanting to immigrate to Canada can avail this rare opportunity of applying immediately for Canada immigration.

            Different job positions for registered nurses in Canada—
            If one happens to be a registered nurse, then one can work in any of the following categories—

            • Nurse researchers;
            • Nurse instructors;
            • Nurse practitioners;
            • Specialized nurses(for nephrology, dialysis, burn patient, cardiology);
            • Psychiatric nurses;
            • And several others too.

            So, this clearly reveals that being a registered nurse qualifies you for a great future ahead in Canada.

            Nurses in Canada—some vital facts—
            If you want to work as a nurse in Canada, then you need to be registered or licensed in the territory or the Canadian province you wish to practice in. And except Quebec, the CRNE (Canadian Registered Nurses Examination) is required for license/registration in all Canadian provinces.

            Language requirement for nurses in Canada—
            For pursuing the profession of nursing in Canada and for becoming licensed or registered nurse in Canada, one must have proficiency in either of the two official languages of Canada, i.e. French or English. And having bilingual proficiency will be a big asset for the candidates.

            Employment prospects for nurses in Canada—
            With the expected shortage of nurse professionals in Canada in the coming ten years period, there is a bright future and a promising career opportunity for nurses in Canada.

            So, Canada will need nurses having specialized skills in critical care, emergency room and operating room. And those who are ready to relocate to isolated or remote areas will be offered quicker recruitment.

                            Δουλειά σε ένα καλό εργοστάσιο δυσκολα βρίσκεις κ να σε πληρώνει κ καλα λ7! Εξαρτάται τι εμπειρία έχεις κ τι ψάχνεις. Εγω ειμαι στο τομεα του automotive parts κ αν με προσλάβουν θα εχω ποκυ κακα λεφτά κ benefits. Αλλα εργοστάσια σ δινουν το πολύ 14-15 $ την ωρα.
                            Κ το καλύτερο γ μπεις σε εργοστάσιο είναι να ξεκινήσεις με κάποιο ατζέντη π νοικιάζει εργάτες σε εργοστάσιο κ με τον καιρό οταν θα βγάλουν αγγελία ότι ψαχνουν προσωπικό θα είναι πιο ευκολο να σε προσλάβουν γιατί θα χουν μια εικονα γ εσενα. Ελπίζω να βοήθησα. Οτι αλλο θες εδω είμαι.

                                Να κάνω μία ερώτηση που προέκυψε από συζήτηση χθες με κάτι φίλους.
                                Την προϋπηρεσία μου σε μία δουλειά πως την αποδεικνύω στους Καναδούς;
                                Με Βεβαίωση Εργοδοσίας από τον εργοδότη ή πρέπει να στείλω & Λίστα Ενσήμων από το ΙΚΑ;
                                Ρωτάω για να ξέρω εάν θα μετρήσω την πρακτική μου σαν προϋπηρεσία λόγω έλλειψης ενσήμων.
